Is Red Wine Really Able to Improve Your Oral Health?
You may already be aware of the health benefits that come from drinking a daily glass of red wine, especially if you are already a red wine drinker. But what you may not have been aware of are the benefits to your oral health. In fact, new research has shown that red wine may be just as essential to your oral health as regular cleanings, brushing, and even flossing your teeth!
Our researchers came together from seven different universities and health departments in the country of Spain and found from their study that red wine (as well as cranberries, blueberries, and raspberries, which are often found in red wine) can improve the state of your mouth and your overall wellness. Why is this? The antioxidants that are contained within these berries, and therefore wine, contain micronutrient compounds that are known as polyphenols. Polyphenols can work to fight off the harmful bacteria in your mouth that causes tooth decay and gum disease. But that’s not all! As a bonus, these can also work to ward off cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even certain neurological diseases.
The researchers in Spain conducted their study to see whether or not the harmful bacteria that can reduce oral health were affected in any way by the polyphenols found in red wine, red wine extracts, and grape seeds. Working closely with the cells that help to replicate gum tissue, these researchers were able to conclude that two polyphenols found in wine act as key cells in reducing the chances that bacteria stick to the teeth, and therefore cause harm to mouth.
Each day, millions of this harmful bacteria (the bacteria that causes the buildup of plaque and tartar, as well as the formation of cavities) grow on the gums and the teeth. But the study conducted by these Spanish researchers shows that drinking red wine, and even popping a few delicious berries from time to time, allow the polyphenols contained within to act as shields for your teeth and block the bacteria from forming. This is even more effective when combined with an oral probiotic. So if you enjoy red wine already, you can feel excellent about the good work that you are doing for your teeth by drinking a glass. And if you are hoping to improve the health of your mouth, a glass each day can figuratively be just what the doctor ordered!
It’s important to remember that wine should be enjoyed in moderation, as drinking it in excess can stain your teeth. Also, this study is in its infancy and was conducted on artificial gums. So while red wine can be highly beneficial to your oral health, be sure to continue brushing your teeth, flossing, and regularly stopping by your dentist for cleanings.
